Rating: 4/5

"Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods."

I love Greek Mythology, so it was only right that I had to read Percy Jackson! I had watched the film when it first came out and I really enjoyed it, but now that I have read the book, I can see why some people were disappointed with the film, There are a lot of differences between the film and the book, so it was nice to read things that I hadn't seen on screen! I really enjoyed how Riordan mixed classic mythology with the present day, and I would think that that would have been quite difficult to do! I personally loved how Hades wears a silk robe made from the many souls trapped in hell; very classy.

As mentioned previously, I had seen the film before I read the book, so I knew what was going to happen, but as the film is quite different from the book, I came across a few pleasant surprises which made the book even more enjoyable to read!

I think this would be a great book for young children starting to get into reading more YA literature as it has all of the wondrously dangerous sense of adventure but isn't as hard hitting as the Hunger Games or The Maze Runner.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next in the series (The Sea of Monsters) but will have to get it in the American cover so it matches, which is really difficult when you don't live in America! I haven't seen the film of TSOM, so everything will come as a surprise, which will be nice! I'm also looking forward to see what new mythological creatures and beings Riordan has added to the stories!

If you've read Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief, let me know what you thought of the book in the comments below!

Love, K :)
