A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness | Book Review

Wednesday, 20 July 2016

Rating: 5/5

"Conor has the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill, ever since she started the treatments that don't quite seem to be working. But tonight is different. Tonight, when he wakes, there's a visitor at his window. It's ancient, elemental, a force of nature. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth"

I can't get over how amazing this book was! I have heard a few people say how good they thought it was, but this book, now that I have read it, means so much to me. This definitely going to be a story that stays with me forever!

'A Monster Calls' is a sweet yet bitter story of a young boy called Conor who is dealing with his mothers illness. It truly is a wondrous tales of courage, bravery and facing your fears. I learnt a lot about myself and my way of thinking when reading this book; some of which I was quite surprised at knowing. I felt the same fear, frustration and confusion as Conor, and Ness really makes you feel the same feelings as Conor; absolutely other-worldly writing!

I have so much to say about this book, but I simply cannot put it into words; this is something that must be read, something you feel and experience for yourself.

I cried so much whilst reading this book, mainly because I somehow felt like I knew what it was like to go through those emotions, even though I haven't. I cried because I felt like I know what the characters were going through, even though I didn't. I think that's what makes this tale an amazing one. Ness makes you feel like you are going on this journey with Conor, and in turn, you learn things about yourself that you didn't once before, just like Conor.

I only wish that this story would have gone on for forever, but then again maybe not; for we all have to let go of things. After all, that's how we grow.

Nimona - Noelle Stevenson | Book Review

Monday, 18 July 2016

Rating: 4/5

"Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit"

I am becoming a real big fan of Noelle Stevensons' work! From reading The Lumberjanes graphic novels and now this, you can see some of the themes have transferred over to what is Stevensons unique writing 'stamp'!

Nimona tells the tale of a young, and somewhat unpredictable, evil sidekick with a knack for shapeshifting. Set in a universe where knights joust but still communicate using Skype, Nimona is a tale of forgiveness, bravery and facing your demons.

I loved the characters within this book and loved how Nimona's appearance isn't the usual 'female-lead' look; it varys within the book and I think this is important for people to see. The illustrations in this books are lovely and detailed, accompanied by a daring story-line which includes dragons, chemical warfare and love.

This book is definitely suitable for anyone and everyone and is an enchanting read! I only wish it was longer!

Let me know if you have read any of Noelle Stevenson's work and coment what you thought!

My New Balayage Hair!

Tuesday, 12 July 2016

I have been wanting to do something a bit different with my hair for a while now, but I wasn't sure if I wanted a full colour or something a bit in-between, I have been wanting to dye my hair lighter, either blonde or perhaps auburn/copper (think Sansa Stark, that would be so DREAMY!). After pondering on this for some time I decided to meet halfway with my thoughts and have balayage! I had my hair done buy the absolutly awesome team at Solarium Point in Ramsgate! It's such an amazing salon and looks insane inside!

Balayage is a tad like ombre, but more freehand. Where ombre is the lower half of your hair completely dyed and fading as it goes up towards your crown, balayage is more natural and the hair stylist has full control of where they dye the hair; this can be single strands, lower end of the hair or more crown orientated, and this gives it a more natural, sun-kissed look!

I have never had my hair dyed before, and I have actually have never even been to a hairdressers before! As my Mum used to be a hairdresser, she has always cut my hair for me, but I decided to treat myself and go to a professional salon and I can say that I will definitely be back for more! I really enjoyed the experience of going to get my hair done, and I felt gloriously pampered afterwards! I LOVED how my hair turned out! Maybe soon I will dye it my dream colour of auburn! Let me know if any of you guys have had your hair balayaged before and if you liked it!

The Lumberjanes Volume 2: Friendship To The Max - Noelle Stevenson & Grace Ellis | Book Review

Tuesday, 5 July 2016

Rating: 5/5

"Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are not your average campers and Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types is not your average summer camp. Between the river monsters, magic, and the art of friendship bracelets, this summer is only just beginning. Join the Lumberjanes as they take on raptors and a sibling rivalry that only myths are made of"

I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES! I loved the first one, but this one just got a whole load better! In this volume we encounter quite a mythological scenario, which is something that I really enjoyed reading! This volume covers issues 5 - 8!

Continuing straight from where Volume One left off, we see Mal, Molly, April, Ripley and Jo encounter even more strange and mystical going-ons as well as dinosaurs and Greek Gods!

What else is there to say? I love this so much! The art work is incredible, the characters are insanely lovable and diverse and the story is amazing! If you're up for some adventure, puzzle solving and friendship, then this is the book for you. I really recommend this to any age group, but think a young audience will be drawn to this more.

I really see pieces of myself in each of these characters, which is why I think they are so lovable and real , because they feel real and communicate as friends like we would do.

I can't wait to read the next one!

Let me know if you have read any in the series and tell me whether you enjoyed them, but please no spoilers!

The Lumberjanes Volume 1: Beware The Kitten Holy - Noelle Stevenson & Grace Ellis | Book Review

Monday, 4 July 2016

Rating: 5/5

"FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX! At Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's camp for hard-core lady-types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams. Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together... And they're not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger, and it all begins here"

Firstly I would like to say, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS! This is such a great book for all ages, although I think it would attract a teen/young adult audience more. This graphic novel is about a group of very diverse young women who attend a summer camp and have supernatural encounters. Think 'Gravity Falls' and Girl Scouts, and that's what this is. 'Beware The Kitten Holy' is the first 4 issues of 'The Lumberjanes' and is combined as volume 1.

I think this is the first book of any kind ever to actually make me laugh out loud! I really loved how diverse and different the characters are within this volume and am happy to see such diversity being shown/read to a young audience! I love supernatural stuff like this anyway, and combined with the adventurous summer camp, there is so much to love! I really wish that these characters and summer camp was real, I would love to meet them and get stuck in their adventures!

This book/graphic novel really does embody the wealth of true friendship and how working together is the best way to solve problems! The group face many challenges and problems, and each of the characters help out in some way, weather it be strength, intelligence, skill or bravery, we can all learn something amazing from these characters.

It is also very much well saying that the artwork in this volume is INSANE! I love looking and fawning over the detailed panles in this graphic novel and if anyone questions why graphic novels are usually ore expensive than books, just show them the artwork. You can definitely tell that the artists working on this book took so much time and passion into creating this piece of wonder.

I can't wait to read the next volume!

Let me know if you have read this before, or what you thought of the other volumes, but no spoilers!

Love, K :)
