Sleeping Giants - Sylvian Neuvel | Book Review

Rating: 4/5

"A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand. Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?"

I knew from the moment I saw this book in Waterstones that it was going to be absolutely amazing. I was not disappointed! From the moment I saw the front cover, which is probably the most beautiful book cover I have ever seen, I couldn't wait to read it! Sci Fi is one of my favourite genres for books and film, so I was really excited to be reading a SciFi as I have recently been reading a lot of magical realism.

Firstly, I loved how this book uses an interview style/diary format. It was really interesting to read as I don't think I have read a book in this style before. I found myself wanting to know more about the interviewer more than the interviewee; he's a very shady character and seems to know a lot, an all seeing eye if you will. The book also offers a diary segment for different characters, as well as audio logs and even a newspaper article. I would never have thought this format of storytelling would be very visual, but Nuevel manages to do so in a brilliant manner, leaving just the right amount up to the imagination.

It's got the perfect amount of mystery, science, wonder and thrill. As a lover of Sci Fi, I am very excited to see where the rest of the series goes! Distant planets? The depths of the Earth?? Another galaxy?! Who knows, but I can't wait!

Overall, this was such a thrilling read and one I enjoyed a lot! I can't wait for the second book in this series cone out; Walking Gods! It's such a different take on the Sci Fi genre and ends on many unanswered questions!

If you have read this book, let me know what you thought of it in the comments below!

̶N̶e̶w̶ ̶Y̶e̶a̶r̶,̶ ̶N̶e̶w̶ ̶M̶e̶ New Year, Better Me | My Resolutions

Tuesday, 3 January 2017

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I've always slightly disliked the phrase 'New Year, New Me'. I see the New Year to be a threshold of, yes, new opportunity, but not a 'new me', because I like 'me' very much, but now it's just time to get better, to improve.

I see the New Year as a time to reflect upon what you have achieved in the past 365 days, and to look ahead as to what you can achieve for the next; if you want to improve on a skill or take up a new hobby, make a certain commitment or donate to a charity, that sort of thing. It's a time to improve upon yourself, to make yourself a better, wholesome person than you were the year before, and that's what I intend to do. So, here are my New Years Resolutions:

  1. Become Healthy - I know... this is probably no.1 on a lot of people's list (that and 'lose weight'), but I have never wanted to lose weight, and quite frankly I don't care how much I weigh as it has never bothered me. But what I do care about is being healthy. I have noticed, on my spurts of occasionally being healthy, how I have felt, and it felt good. I felt happier, more energetic, and almost like I had a bit of sparkle in my step. That's what I want back; my sparkle. Also, I want to win The Hunger Games, pretend that I'm a sassy scavenger on the planet Jakku who has just realised she has The Force, pretend I'm running away from zombies, and possibly just be a badass heroine. God, I'm such a fangirl.
  2. Practice Mindfulness - This is something I really want to focus on in the New Year. I have been meditating on and off for a few months and have always enjoyed the little bubble I was in whilst doing so. When I meditate and practice 'mindfulness', I like to reflect on my day; the goods and the bads, what could have gone better, why I made the choices I did and so on and so forth. I then also like to plan for the next day; what I'm going to do, encourage a positive outlook for the next day, and visualize what I want to achieve. I have found it really helpful, and as we all lead busy lifestyles, I have found it very important to just stop and listen for a while.
  3. Start Taking Driving Lessons - Even though I learned how to drive a Moped in March, I would love to start taking driving lessons! I wanted to get the most out of using my moped first, but I am thinking of taking driving lessons in the Summer and am very excited!
  4. Read More - This is on my list EVERY YEAR! I always want to read more, and last year I didn't read as many books as I would have liked, but I've got a MASSIVE To Be Read pile, so hopefully I'll find myself latched onto a few good books this year. A few that I am particularly excited to read are: 'Six of Crows' - Leigh Bardugo, 'The Girl With All The Gifts' - M.R Carey, 'Trollhunters' - Guillermo del Torro and 'Good Omens' - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman!
  5. Learn How To Surf - In the Summer of last year, myself and a friend were going to go surfing, and I even booked a surfing lesson, but unfortunately she wasn't able to go! So now I have an unused Surfing lesson (luckily they have a 12 month expiry date!) and am hoping to learn in the Summer! It has been something that I have always wanted to do as I love the sea and it looks like a super cool sport. It's quite popular close to where I live, so hopefully I'll find a lovely community to talk to and surf with!
  6. Film More - As most of you may know, what I really want to do in life is to make films. Myself and a few friends make films together and we all thrive off of it. When we aren't filming, we feel like we are being put to waste; we live and breathe filmmmaking, but sadly we haven't gotten much time the past year to film as we are all off on different paths now (uni and work) so it makes things difficult. It's such a shame as well that we all don't spend time together because I really feel like these guys are my family and we all love making films so much, but rarely have a chance to do it. So this year, I'm making a commitment to make more films! We all have a few cracking idea's to expand and develop, so hopefully you all will be seeing some exciting stuff real soon! You can follow our shenanigans at +G27 Films on Instagram, Twitter and Youtube!
  7. Go On A Short Holiday With Friends - This is always something that I have wanted to do! Myself and my friends have never been on holiday together, and now that we are all a bit older and are all in work, we can finally have a mini-holiday somewhere! I have always loved the ideas of going on a weekend break to Paris, but we'll see what the squad thinks :)
  8. Enter Something Into A Film Competition - Again, MAKE MORE FILMS! Hopefully we will be able to create something that is worthy of entering into a contest! It' also a great opportunity to see what other filmmakers are making and is always a great way of making new connections and like-minded people.
  9. Finish Writing A Book - Something that I have been keeping to myself is that I'm in the process of writing a book. I love writing just as much as I love reading, and so it's only right to be inspired y what I have read. Think of 'Harry Potter' but with books, and that is basically what I am writing. At the moment it's just a passion project, but as I write more I would love to publish it one day!
  10. Watch Something At The Theatre/A Musical - I LOVE going to the West End, but I rarely get to do so! Ever since I was in a production of Miss Saigon, I have been in love with musicals! Some shows/plays I would love to and see are: 'The Cursed Child', 'Les Miserable', 'The Tempest' and 'The Lion King'.
So, there you have it! All of my New Year Resolutions. I hope you have found this interesting and maybe I ahve inspired you to think of a new resolution for yourself. Let me know what your resolutions are in the comments below!

Here's to a great New Year!

Love, K :)
