Rating: 4/5

"A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand. Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?"

I knew from the moment I saw this book in Waterstones that it was going to be absolutely amazing. I was not disappointed! From the moment I saw the front cover, which is probably the most beautiful book cover I have ever seen, I couldn't wait to read it! Sci Fi is one of my favourite genres for books and film, so I was really excited to be reading a SciFi as I have recently been reading a lot of magical realism.

Firstly, I loved how this book uses an interview style/diary format. It was really interesting to read as I don't think I have read a book in this style before. I found myself wanting to know more about the interviewer more than the interviewee; he's a very shady character and seems to know a lot, an all seeing eye if you will. The book also offers a diary segment for different characters, as well as audio logs and even a newspaper article. I would never have thought this format of storytelling would be very visual, but Nuevel manages to do so in a brilliant manner, leaving just the right amount up to the imagination.

It's got the perfect amount of mystery, science, wonder and thrill. As a lover of Sci Fi, I am very excited to see where the rest of the series goes! Distant planets? The depths of the Earth?? Another galaxy?! Who knows, but I can't wait!

Overall, this was such a thrilling read and one I enjoyed a lot! I can't wait for the second book in this series cone out; Walking Gods! It's such a different take on the Sci Fi genre and ends on many unanswered questions!

If you have read this book, let me know what you thought of it in the comments below!

Love, K :)
